Before Don Ho got his start in Waikiki he played at a small place in Kaneohe called Honey's Cafe where the audience was mainly locals. My older brother loved slack key guitar and would often hang out at Honey's when Don was there. They got to know each other and when Don learned that my brother played slack key he invited him up on stage to jam. When he did, a local Hawaiian in the audience yelled "Eh, what's dat haole doing up there?" After they played, my brother received a standing ovation.
